Albert M. Greenfield Elementary School in Center City, Philadelphia, transformed its parking-lot schoolyard into a vibrant green space. This multi-purpose school ground manages runoff from rain water, acts as an outdoor classroom, and provides green recreation space for the students and local residents. Greenfield Elementary features an indigenous woodland forest garden, porous pavement, a permeable play surface made out of recycled materials, an agriculture zone, and trees that provide migratory bird and butterfly habitat (as well as shade!). The "Greening Greenfield" effort aims to be a model that can be replicated by other schools.
